Now that 2025 is in full swing its time for the annual Game Developers Conference which will take place from March 17th to the 21st in San Francisco. Ahead of the conference GDC has released the results of a survey taken from developers and various industry professionals asking questions about important developments in the gaming industry such as layoffs, generative ai, and platform development. Although many game studios and teams have been pruned in recent time it appears that roles related to the narrative of games has been the top job shedder in the industry this past year. The reasons for these layoffs vary from claimed restructuring to declining revenue. Another hot topic that is not exclusive to the games industry but creators in general is the use of Generative AI with as much as 30% of developers having a negative outlook on its use. These developers feel that games that utilize this ai lack character and substance of traditional content and there are of course many concerns over intellectual property violations. The report also claims that developers are feeling very good about the PC platform with an increase this year to 80% from 60% of developers making or planning to make games with PC in mind. The industry is also seeing a lot more games being self funded rather than being fully funded projects. If you want to see this report for yourself or learn more about the conference visit the GDC website.
